Who is Aduei Riak?

At the age of three, Riak began traveling from country to country across Africa in search of refuge from the civil war that started in her homeland a year before she was born. In 1987, along with her mother and five siblings, Riak first fled to Ethiopia when the civil war led to a mass exodus from her home country. She lived with her family in a refugee camp for the next several years until they were separated and forced out during a political uprising.   Read More >>

About the Film

Like River, A Girl is a character driven feature documentary that explores the life of Aduei Riak, one of the Lost Girls of Sudan who came to America through a resettlement program in 2000. The film chronicles Aduei's ongoing struggle to help rebuild her war-ravaged country by providing education for girls in her home village of Malek in Southern Sudan. Read More >>

The Filmmakers

Executive Producer/Director - Thato R. Mwosa

Originally from Botswana, Thato is a Boston based filmmaker who focuses on issues pertaining to the African Diaspora. Thato won the coveted "Emerging Local Filmmaker Award" at the 2005 Roxbury Film Festival for her film, Don't Tell Me You Love Me. In 2007, Thato produced her third film, The Day Of My Wedding, which was selected for broadcast on BETJ's "Best Shorts" program in November 2007. The film also won "The 2008 Best short Film Award" at the Pan African Film Festival in Cannes, France. Read More >>

Co-Producer - Tara Rao

For over six years, Tara has volunteered with the Sudanese Education Fund (SEF), which supports the resettled southern Sudanese refugees in the Boston Metro area with their educational needs. She has worked with the Sudanese community by providing assistance with course work, financial aid, scholarship and college admission applications, job applications, resume writing, public housing, and health insurance. Associate Producer - Lauren Servin

Lauren has a lot of experience working in Southern Sudan. In 2008, she was project manager of a secondary school project in Lainya County, Southern Sudan, which opened in May of that year. There she developed and implemented the school farm, hired teachers, recruited students, managed the school site and worked with a small team to develop the school from its infancy. Read More >>
